What started with the need for a rejig of her cottage staircase turned into a major refurbishment project for Erica Donnellan when she moved into East Bergholt – and thanks to Hall Brothers, she is delighted with the results.

“I was initially concerned that the steep stairs without any handrails were a potential hazard and I wanted to make them safer”, she says. “I contacted Hall Brothers and Philip visited me to discuss the job. I was so impressed with his ideas for a solution that we explored other areas of the cottage that needed to be addressed too.

“One of these was a rather dark study which we were able to open up with the removal of the wall, the replacement of the oak beam, the installation of two new small windows and addition of oak bookcases, all of which transformed the space. Replacing the flooring and internal doors was superbly executed and retained the character of the property.

“As well as seeing outstanding traditional craftsmanship, I really appreciated Hall Brothers’ problem-solving skills, suggesting practical solutions that were also attractive. They were also able to see how we could adapt what was already there to make it more suitable for my specific requirements, as with the kitchen and utility room where we reconfigured the layout and resprayed the existing units in a contemporary colour.

“Inevitably with a Victorian property like this, bringing it up to date involved a number of challenges along the way such as structural alterations, dealing with damp, drainage, insulation and plasterwork, all of which were handled in a reassuring way. The project took a total of around six months to complete during which I lived in the property but the team were unfailingly delightful, courteous and tidy making it an excellent experience.”
